When Priscilla Eades, soon to inherit millions from her family's company, requests to stay at Wolfe's house for a few days, he downright refuses and sends her out. The next day she is killed. Wolfe, who is low on money and has no client, does not investigate, but Archie impersonates a police officer to question the shareholders at the company. He is arrested but bailed out by Wolfe, and with Archie himself as his client, Wolfe decides to take the case.

Wolfe gathers all the people who would have had a motive in the death of Priscilla Eades and hears their stories. He thinks he knows who did it but there is a flaw and he decides not to tell Archie. When someone steals a suspect's keys and breaks into her apartment, she is soon found dead.
